A young plastic surgeon just starting his own practice contacted the Yellow Pages to purchase a listing for his office. Seeking a listing under plastic surgery physicians, he was shocked when no one at Yellow Pages asked him to prove he was board certified plastic surgeon; as long as he paid for the ad, Yellow Pages didn’t care. The young plastic surgeon wondered if a physician could simply advertiser under any specialty s/he wanted in the Yellow Pages. For instance, could a dermatologist advertise as a plastic surgeon? Of the many physicians advertising under the section of “Physicians and Surgeons, M.D. –Plastic and Reconstructive,” he found several types of physicians, including: Board Certified/Eligible by the American Board of Plastic Surgery; Certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic Surgery; Certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery; and a dermatologist. If a physician was confused by these choices within the Yellow Pages section of plastic and reconstructive surgeons, it’s little wonder that patients seeking plastic surgery are confused. The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is the main board certification organization in the United States, and under the ABMS are 24 medical specialty boards.
