With the New Year we see many patients at the Eisemann Plastic Surgery Center who want to reshape their bodies to its more youthful, contoured appearance. Along with proper diet and exercise, some patients look to liposuction to help achieve their aesthetic goals. When searching for the right plastic surgeon, we hope our patients will ask questions and do their homework before selecting a surgeon. Some of the questions patients ask us about liposuction involve the safety and efficacy of non-surgical alternatives. Dr. Eisemann often gets questions about a technique called lipodissolve or mesotherapy. This kind of treatment involves injections of chemicals that were originally designed for dissolving gallstones. Some people refer to this as “fat-melting” shots. While patients understandably seek body-contouring treatments that do not involve surgery, there are few, if any legitimate shortcuts. This type of procedure is unsuitable for a variety of reasons. First, fat resides in a mesh-like set of fibers in the body, which sit at irregular angles. This makes it difficult, if not impossible, for the injected chemicals to spread evenly, which is why many patients reported having bumpy, uneven results following lipodissolve treatment. Additionally, fat-melting shots are known to cause pain and inflammation as well as scarring. Lastly and perhaps most importantly, the US FDA has not given its stamp of approval to any injectable drug to eliminate fat. Liposuction remains the gold standard for patients to contour their bodies that offer both safety and efficacy with immediate results. Liposuction should be performed only by a board certified plastic surgeon that performs the procedure on a regular basis. The Eisemann Plastic Surgery Center offers excellence and experience to patients seeking liposuction surgery.
