Approximately 85% of women over the age of 20 years old have cellulite deposits on some part of their body, and it is important to know that cellulite does not just target women who are overweight or obese. Skinny models can also be troubled by this condition. Cellulite are fat deposits that rest just below the skin in areas such as the abdomen, hips and thighs, and these deposits create a displeasing “cottage cheese” or “orange peel” look to the skin. Therefore, treating cellulite deposits in women is a multi-billion dollar industry. Recently, the FDA gave clearance to a new laser based device called Cellulaze. According to the manufacturer’s press release, Cellulaze is a minimally invasive procedure that has shown a reduction of cellulite with some improvement immediately after treatment, and in some instances greater improvement in the weeks following treatment. The device works on the physiological structure of cellulite breaking down the fibrous bands that create the dimpled appearance. The FDA study evaluated both subjective and some qualitative data before authorizing commercial application of this device. As with anything new, The Eisemann Plastic Surgery Center hopes that innovations can help us to better serve our patients, but we proceed with caution to make sure that new treatments are really in our patient’s best interests.
