When you have lost a significant amount of weight, you are left feeling wonderful about your lighter self. However, you are also often left with a large amount of excess skin that did not shrink around your slimmer figure. This can leave you unsatisfied with the result of all your hard work to lose that weight. An arm lift is one of the many body lift procedures available to reshape your sagging skin.
The Arm Lift Procedure
An arm lift, also called brachioplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure that can:
- Reduce excess skin and tissue that sags on your upper arm
- Tighten the remaining supportive tissue to give your upper arm better definition
- Reduce the amount of fatty deposits in your upper arm region
During an arm lift procedure, an incision is made along the backside of your arm or in the underarm area, depending on the extent of surgical intervention needed. Liposuction may be used to eliminate unwanted fatty deposits. Excess skin and tissue are removed. Underlying structures are reshaped with internal sutures. Then skin is redraped and smoothed over your new arm contour.
Is an Arm Lift Right for You?
The best way to determine whether an arm lift is the right procedure to help you achieve your aesthetic goals is to meet with a qualified plastic surgeon to discuss how an arm lift can benefit your figure. In general, an arm lift may be right for you if you have:
- Significant skin laxity in the upper arm
- A stable weight and do not anticipate any further major weight fluctuations
- Good general overall health with no medical conditions that could impair healing
The arm lift procedure will leave a visible scar on your arm. For most patients this is an acceptable trade for having the slim, toned-looking arms that fit with their figure.
