Stem cells are constantly in the news because of the potential for treating a wide variety of medical conditions; they are also in the news because of controversy over the source of harvesting. An emerging technology in cosmetic and plastic surgery is the use of adult stem cells to rejuvenate the aesthetics of the body. However, scientists don’t currently have enough data to make any conclusions on the effectiveness of stem cell treatment for cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures. Therefore, both the American Society for Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society for Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) issued a joint position statement. Both the ASAPS and ASPS position is that stem cells have significant potential for the future of surgical procedures, the scientific data must first be evaluated to determine effectiveness and patient safety. Because Houston is one of the top cities for medical research, there will undoubtedly local research. Until the data paints a clearer picture of efficacy and safety, the Eisemann Plastic Surgery Center will continue to perform tried and true cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation and facelifts. Dr. Eisemann is a member of both the ASAPS and ASPS. Additionally, he is an academic faculty member at University of Texas Medical School and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Therefore, he remains in close contact with cutting edge research so he can best educate and serve his patients.
