Men, Ptosis And Plastic Surgery

According to statistics published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), only eight percent (8%) of men make up the annual population of Americans who seek cosmetic surgery. Whether men avoid the plastic surgeon’s office because of cultural mores or biology, the number of men seeking both consults and treatment form plastic surgeons has been on the rise for several consecutive years. At The Eisemann Plastic Surgery Center we find that many of our male patients are uncomfortable during their initial visit, but Dr. Eisemann and our staff put them at ease. We find that many of the men who initially seek a consultation with Dr. Michael Eisemann do so to address a medical condition called ptosis. Simply put, ptosis is a drooping of the upper eyelid tissue that narrows the patient’s visual field. Most of the time, these male patients are referred by another treating physician, with the goal of exploring the possibilities of a blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). In some instances, upper eyelid blepharoplasty may be covered by the patient’s insurance if the impact on the patient’s vision is substantial, and if upper eyelid surgery will restore the patient’s field of vision. Alternatively, some men are given a gentle push from their spouse or partner to seek the advice of a cosmetic surgeon. Blepharoplasty can be a life altering surgery for patients, because it not only improves the field of vision due to ptosis, but it also opens the eyes, which are the primary focal point of the face for both men and women. It is not unusual for men who elect to have upper eyelid surgery to also consider lower eyelid surgery. Both can be performed simultaneously, and lower eyelid surgery reduces under-eye bags thereby providing a more youthful appearance. The Eisemann Plastic Surgery Center, regardless of gender or motivation for surgery, treats patients with respect and dignity.
