Plastic Surgery, Aesthetic Medicine And Coupons – Not a Good Combination

Every morning when consumers sign into their e-mail account it’s likely the inbox contains at least one solicitation for a discount product or service through sites like Groupon, Living Social, Coupon Mom, Angie’s List and the like.   While these offers can provide nice opportunities to find discounts on home repairs, sadly medical services are also solicited. This includes plastic and aesthetic surgery procedures like injectables or even liposuction. There are several problems with such marketing. First, physicians have an ethical obligation not to fee-split with non-physicians or engage in the practice of medicine with non-physicians; when a physician’s office promotes a deal through sites like Groupon, that is exactly what happens. Next, and most importantly, this kind of marketing campaign usually creates an influx of calls and appointments – sometimes more than the physician’s office can handle along with his/her existing patients. This creates a scenario where patients are rushed through the intake process. That is not what medicine is about! Physicians, whether they practice general surgery or plastic surgery, do best by their patients when they establish a good working relationship based on candor and understanding their patient’s goals along with their medical history. At The Eisemann Plastic Surgery Center we are sometimes asked why we don’t promote “deals” or coupons, and the reason is Dr. Eisemann respects the ethical tenets of the practice of medicine as well as values the patient/physician relationship. It is not now or ever our goal to get “X” number of patients in this month to get liposuction with a focus on something else next month. It is our pleasure to work with patients who value the individual relationship with their physicians as well as his/her unique credentials.
