Mastectomy and lumpectomy can have a significant impact on the appearance of your body. These necessary procedures deserve to be applauded for the women whose lives they have saved, but shouldn’t the changes they make to your appearance be considered as well?

Triple board-certified Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Eisemann thinks so. So does the United States Congress who, through legislation, has required all insurance companies to cover the cost of most breast reconstruction procedures.

Breast Reconstruction Options

Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Eisemann offers both the flap and breast implant methods of breast reconstruction. With the flap method, Dr. Eisemann will use fat, skin, muscle, or other tissue harvested from your body to create a new breast mound. The most popular method, the TRAM flap, uses muscle and tissue from the abdominal area, but other flap techniques may use tissue from the back, buttocks, or chest as well.

The flap method can produce ideal contours, but may need to be performed after you have completed Radiotherapy treatments.

Breast reconstruction with breast implants can often be done at the same time as your cancer removal. With this option, Dr. Eisemann will use a tissue expander to make room for an implant. After room has been made, which can take a few months, an implant can be placed in the space made by the tissue expander.

Dr. Eisemann has found that cohesive-gel silicone implants, also known as “gummy bear” implants, are ideal for this procedure as they tend to look and feel like natural breast tissue. Gummy bear implants may also last significantly longer than earlier generation silicone implants.

The final part of your breast reconstruction will include nipple and areola restoration. However, even though Dr. Eisemann is an experienced breast surgeon, it is important to remember that your reconstructed breast will not look the same as your natural breast. The goal with this procedure is to restore symmetry and balance – a goal that Dr. Eisemann can discuss in greater detail during your Houston breast reconstruction consultation.
