Safety In Plastic Surgery

Well-trained, ethical board certified plastic surgeons certainly acknowledge the Hippocratic dictum ‘”DO NO HARM”.   Aesthetic surgery epitomizes the need for safety in surgery because it is often considered elective preformed for the purposes of enhancing appearance rather than the treatment of an ailment. Anesthesia Care should be safe and a positive experience. At the Eisemann Cosmetic Surgery Center safety is the preeminent consideration. We have followed evidence-based guidelines to control risks associated with anesthesia as well as cardiovascular, pulmonary, diabetic, and neurological conditions. Dr. Eisemann and his staff have been certified every 2 years in the provider ADVANCED CARDIOPULMONARY LIFE SUPPORT course (ACLS). Intravenous sedation and with special knowledge and expertise in regional nerve block anesthesia is used whenever possible to reduce the risks of general anesthesia, which include but not limited to: deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolus, postoperative nausea and vomiting as well as hemodynamic instability. Intraoperative personnel are the same for all surgical procedures to reduce the risks of medication administrative errors and SYSTEM FAILURES.

Safety at the Eisemann COSMETIC SURGERY CENTER is the result of a SYSTEM OF CARE which includes well-trained personnel, use of advanced surgical equipment, policies governing their use, the physical compartment of the operating room and finally the technical expertise and knowledge of Dr. Eisemann performing the operation.

We have noticed an increasing interest in price bargaining and price shopping by certain prospective patients for surgical procedures performed by untrained surgeons. Mishaps and unfavorable results have been reported in the press. We have continued to stress the importance of BOARD CERTIFICATION by the AMERICAN BOARD of MEDICAL SPECIALTIES (ABMS) as a minimum requirement for performing plastic surgery. Dr. Eisemann is BOARD CERTIFIED in 3 separate BOARDS recognized by the ABMS:

1. American Board of Plastic Surgery;
2. American Board of Facial Plastic Surgery; and,
3. American Board of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery.

There is no Board accreditation or certification by the ABMS which has the word ”COSMETIC” in its title.

The number and type of procedures performed by the surgeon as well as postoperative photographic documentation of the surgery should be available to the prospective patient. The surgeon should have the qualification and accreditation to perform the same procedures in the hospital as well as in an outpatient surgical facility.

There is no substitute for training and experience and accreditation.
